Player Melee in Detroit
Los Angeles Lakers power player Lebron James’ left forearm and fist connecting sharply with the cheekbone and right eye of Detroit Pistons player Isaiah Stewart sparked a melee that lasted for minutes. Both players were ejected during the third quarter of the 21 November 2021 game at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. Stewart’s cheekbone was bleeding badly as he lashed out in response at James.
For two minutes, Stewart tried to violently engage multiple players on the Lakers team, running through lines of players, staff, and officials. The public address announcer strongly admonished fans to remain in their seats, not throw any objects, and not rush onto the court. Fans were advised they could be arrested if they violated the fan code of conduct. It took more than two minutes for Pistons staff to hustle Stewart off the court. Video shows him then breaking away from the staff.
Lebron James was cited for a “flagrant foul,” his second of the game, and then ejected. Russell Westbrook received a technical foul. Stewart faces suspension, fines, and other possible sanctions for his unsportsmanlike conduct.
The Lakers beat the Pistons 121-116. Their next meeting is in Los Angeles on 28 November 2021.
